About the Malvern Hills Area

The Malvern Hills area lies between the cathedral cities of Worcester, Hereford and Gloucester. This rural area is dominated by the Malvern Hills which rise to a height of almost 1,400 feet at the Worcestershire Beacon. The "Malverns" consist of a nine mile chain of hills which are popular with walkers. In good weather you can see as far as Wales in one direction and the Cotswolds in the other.

The eastern side of Malvern consists of four main districts,

Barnards Green at the foot of the hills on the main road from Upton upon Severn which has a small shopping centre catering for most everyday needs.

Further up the hill is the ancient town of Great Malvern with shops, theatre and cinema complex, Winter Gardens, the medieval Priory Church, library, the Splash Leisure Centre, and hotels. Waitrose has a big car park. The nearest railway station is Great Malvern on Avenue Road, opposite Malvern St James, designed by Edmund Wallace Elmslie.

Malvern Link, which lies towards the northern end of the Hills,  is the home of the famous Morgan Motor Car factory. There are shops here including BP and Texaco garages, B&Q, and the Coop. The Malvern Shopping Park lies on the outskirts of the Link off the Worcester Road. The turning is off the roundabout adjacent to the Countrywide store, which has recently closed. On the shopping park, amongst other shops, you will find M&S, Halfords, Argos, Next, Matalan, Boots the Chemist, Carphone Warehouse, and Morrisons. A short distance from Morrisons is a Premier Inn on the edge of the Spring Lane industrial estate.

Malvern Wells (home of the Worcestershire Golf Club) and Little Malvern are small hamlets towards the southern part of the Hills.

West Malvern is generally sparsley populated and some of the roads are narrow and winding.

There are many footpaths across the hills, which are well loved by ramblers. Places to park are not always obvious, but the best known is probably the car park at British Camp, off the Ledbury road. Access onto the hills from the shopping centre in Great Malvern can be had up the 99 steps in Rosebank Gardens, and from St Ann's Road beside the Unicorn Inn.
